Need to see a man...
about a bike. I got some cash for my birthday and I want to get a bike. I’d prefer to pay less than $100 so I could buy one of those fancy bicycle trailers to tow Stella and groceries around in. Used would be cool, because goodness knows there are a lot of underused bikes out there for sale on craigslist. Anyone have any ideas of what type of bike I should buy?

I’m your man! I would highly recommend what’s called a “hybrid”. They have very relaxed seats, high handlebars, designed for cruising around. Beware though… craigslist is awesome, but there’s a lot of CRAP there that people want wayyyy too much for. You could get this new… http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/gravity/amsterdam.htm

That one’s over $100 and out of stock. And I know what you’re saying about Craigslist. The number of bikes on there that are heavily used and are only about $20 off of retail is amazing.

Yah, I figured I’d throw it out there since it’s new. Honestly, for $100, you can’t be all that choosy. A $100 bike is a $100 bike… I’d say just look for something that looks to be your size (that might work toward your advantage) and looks comfortable. If you get a road-style geometry bike, you’ll want atleast a 60cm frame, or if you get a mountain/cruiser/hybrid style, you’ll want atleast a 20” frame. The rest doesn’t really matter (gears, brakes, whatever, it’s all the same @ $100).

Maybe I will spend more on the bike. I was just realizing I need a helmet too. So I guess the trailer will have to wait for later.

I feel like we should get a room or something :-) Trailers are super expensive, too, so I’d definitely suggest picking one of those up used. You know, when I was at loopone, Brian had just gotten one to tote Ben around in. He may have outgrown it by now. And the helmet… I’ve got just what you need! Actually, if you want that helmet, you can have it… but I would suggest against it ;) You should be able to pick up a super el-cheapo helmet (all you need) for like $10 or so. I just got one of these new @ REI for $30 (on sale, but not on sale anymore)

Usability issues fixed. In a half-assed sort of way.

there is a used bike trailer for sale at Play it AGain Sports on Rockwood by sun harvest. That might help.
